The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, September 2000

On the site that most of Christianity believes to be the final resting place of Jesus, there is a hall from which the faithful have access to the Holy Stone. The hall has two entrances, but the left one had been sealed for centuries. To restore this entrance, Alony was requested to reconstruct it in accordance with the design customary at the time when the church was built.

Mr.Theo Metropolos, the architect who was commissioned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, planned the restoration of the entrance nearly a quarter of a century ago and Alony scanned the blueprints by computer and printed out a work program.

The architect chose mainly Greek marble of the following types: Green Tinos, Black Eddissa, White Macedonia, Agia Malina but also included Spanish Rojo Alicante.

The marble for the floor was produced by computerized CNC in sections that, after assembly, were installed at the site by a crew from Alony. After installation the marble was polished to give it the finish shown in the photographs.
